About Åland

Åland is an autonomous, demilitarized, and Swedish-speaking region of Finland, located in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland. Comprising around 6,700 islands, of which about 60 are inhabited, Åland is known for its stunning natural beauty, maritime heritage, and unique political status. Governed by its own parliament, the Ålandic government has significant autonomy over local affairs, including education, culture, and environmental policies, while foreign policy and defense remain under Finnish jurisdiction. The archipelago is a popular destination for tourists, offering activities such as sailing, cycling, and exploring its picturesque landscapes and historic sites. With a population of around 30,000, Åland maintains a strong cultural identity, with Swedish as the official language and a rich tradition of seafaring and fishing.
