About Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is a Southeast Asian nation located on the eastern half of the island of Timor, with the western half belonging to Indonesia. It gained independence from Indonesia in 2002, making it one of the youngest countries in the world. The capital, Dili, is a vibrant city that reflects the nation's rich cultural heritage, blending Portuguese colonial influences with indigenous traditions. Timor-Leste is known for its stunning natural beauty, including rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Despite its natural wealth, the country faces significant challenges, such as poverty and underdeveloped infrastructure, as it continues to rebuild after decades of conflict. The official languages are Tetum and Portuguese, and the majority of the population practices Roman Catholicism. Timor-Leste is a member of the United Nations and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, and it is working to strengthen its economy, primarily through oil and gas exports, while preserving its unique cultural identity.
