About Nauru
Nauru, officially known as the Republic of Nauru, is a small island nation located in the Micronesia region of the Pacific Ocean. With a land area of just 21 square kilometers, it is the third smallest country in the world by area, after Vatican City and Monaco. Nauru is known for its rich phosphate deposits, which were extensively mined in the 20th century, leading to significant environmental degradation. The country's economy has historically been heavily reliant on phosphate exports, but with the depletion of these resources, Nauru has faced economic challenges and has sought to diversify its economy through fishing, offshore banking, and aid from international partners. Nauru has a unique political system, being the world's smallest republic, and its population of around 10,000 people is predominantly of Nauruan descent. The island's culture is deeply rooted in Micronesian traditions, and its official languages are Nauruan and English. Despite its small size, Nauru has a rich history and has been a member of the United Nations since 1999, playing an active role in regional and international affairs.
