Mauritania, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country located in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal to the southwest, Mali to the east and southeast, Algeria to the northeast, and the disputed territory of Western Sahara to the north. Covering an area of approximately 1,030,700 square kilometers, Mauritania is characterized by vast expanses of desert, particularly the Sahara, which dominates much of its landscape. The country's capital and largest city is Nouakchott, situated along the Atlantic coast. Mauritania has a rich cultural heritage influenced by Arab-Berber traditions and Sub-Saharan African elements, with Islam being the predominant religion. The economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, and mining, particularly iron ore, which is one of its most significant exports. Despite its natural resources, Mauritania faces challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, and human rights issues, including modern-day slavery. The country is also known for its unique biodiversity, including the Banc d'Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its birdlife and marine ecosystems.
