About Liberia
Liberia, officially known as the Republic of Liberia, is a country located on the West African coast. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to the northwest, Guinea to the north, Côte d'Ivoire to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. Founded in 1847 by freed African-American and Caribbean slaves through the efforts of the American Colonization Society, Liberia is Africa's oldest republic and the only African nation to have self-proclaimed independence without gaining it through revolt. The capital and largest city is Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization movement. Liberia's official language is English, reflecting its historical ties to the United States. The country is rich in natural resources, including iron ore, rubber, and timber, but has faced significant challenges, including civil wars, economic instability, and the Ebola virus epidemic. Despite these difficulties, Liberia has made strides toward rebuilding its infrastructure and governance, striving for peace and development in the 21st century.
