Lesotho, officially known as the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a small, landlocked country entirely surrounded by South Africa. Often referred to as the "Kingdom in the Sky" due to its high altitude, Lesotho is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) in elevation. Its rugged terrain is dominated by the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and skiing. The country is known for its rich cultural heritage, with the Basotho people forming the majority of its population. Traditional practices, such as the wearing of the iconic Basotho blanket, remain integral to its identity. Despite its natural beauty, Lesotho faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. However, its resilient people and stunning landscapes, including the dramatic Maletsunyane Falls and the Sehlabathebe National Park, continue to draw visitors and highlight its unique charm.
