Gabon, officially known as the Gabonese Republic, is a country located on the west coast of Central Africa. It is bordered by Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, the Republic of the Congo, and the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its rich biodiversity, Gabon is home to vast rainforests, which cover about 85% of its territory, and a variety of wildlife, including elephants, gorillas, and leopards. The country is also part of the Congo Basin, one of the world's most important ecological regions. Gabon gained independence from France on August 17, 1960, and its capital city is Libreville. The nation is relatively prosperous compared to its neighbors, largely due to its significant oil reserves, which form the backbone of its economy. Despite its wealth in natural resources, Gabon faces challenges such as income inequality and the need for economic diversification. The country is also known for its commitment to environmental conservation, with over 10% of its land designated as national parks.
